Increase Web Traffic with Games

By John Dillon, C3 SoftWorks Instructional Design/Education Specialist

The Praetorian group has a series of online magazines for Police (policeone.com), Fire (firerescue1.com, Corrections (corrections1.com, and EMS (EMS1.com).

They use BRAVO! to create monthly interactive training games to help draw people to their site. They send these games out in a variety of ways: email, newsletters and on Facebook postings. The games are customized and branded for the their prospective sites and contain educational content. These games in many cases get viewed and played more than many of the articles.

Social Media Promotions: Because BRAVO! allows for the ability to fully customize the pages, they were able to put links directly into the game for people to easily add the games to their Facebook profiles or Twitter accounts.

Tracking data with Google Analytics: Tracking game data is easily done through the use of index pages which BRAVO! automatically creates when you save your game. Adding a Google analytic tracking script at the end of the index page body will help Google track the data from that page. Logging into your Google Analytic account will show you the data for your webpages.

For example, FireResue1 posted a game called the Extrication Challenge in an online newsletter. The game was
played a total of 2,610 times in 4 days - 2,100 of those hits were within the first 24 hours. These games are played throughout the year and continue to help them promote and increase subscriptions. These games have been a unique addition for them in addition to a variety of educational and news articles for their subscribers, which also help reach new subscribers.

Thiagi's Corner
Ideas for creating dynamic activities from existing documents
By Thiagi (aka Sivasailam Thiagarajan, Ph. D.)

Crossword Puzzle Game

Basic idea.
Participants begin by creating crossword puzzle clues for key terms from the reading assignment. Later, participants pair up and solve a crossword puzzle that tests the understanding of the reading assignment.

Reading materials. Articles, chapters, books, technical reports, manuals, spec sheets, theoretical papers, or research reports.

Sample reading assignment. A multicomponent conceptualization of authenticity: A theoretical model

Learning outcome. Recall key terms, facts, and ideas.

Flow. Ask participants to pair up and prepare a list of key terms and concepts from the assigned chapter. Ask each pair to select five of these terms and create crossword puzzle clues for them. Take the word lists and clues from pairs and give them a crossword puzzle that tests the understanding of the contents of the chapter. Pause for a suitable period of time. After a suitable pause, give the solution to participant pairs and have them score their responses. Identify (and congratulate) the winning pair that has solved the most number of items.
